What we will be learning during the week of October 18th - 22nd

Math: We will continue to review for our beginning of the year math benchmark which is Wednesday October 20th. This will cover all of our math we have studied so far this school year including fact families, numbers between, before and after, number lines, counting on and counting back on number lines, tens and ones up to 100, as well as a mad minute addition less than 10. Last Thursday you should have seen in your child's red homework folder the math warm-up we did to review for this benchmark. Use this as a guide to help you review with your child.

Science: This week we are finishing up our Matter Unit. We will finish talking about the changes in matter such as melting, cooling, cooking, heating, burning, etc. Then on Thursday we will take an assessment on our entire Matter Unit. Please review with your child: solids, liquids, gases, properties of matter and changes in matter.

Social Studies: We will finish up our landform unit. We have been working on a book about landform and learning their definitions. Ask your child about these landform: pond, ocean, river, glacier, mountain, valley, foothill, lake, island, peninsula, volcano, and grassy plain.

Writing: We will be learning about commas and quotation marks this week in Writing. We will learn how to use commas correctly in our writing. For example, using commas when writing dates, in a series or list, to separate yes/no and names in the beginning of a sentence, how to use commas in a friendly letter, and in between a city/state. Towards the end of the week we will be learning how to use quotation marks correctly in our writing as well. We'll even get to practice using macaroni noodles which will be alot of fun!!!

Reading: We will finish up our study of bats this week. Last week we enjoyed reading about bats in non-fiction text and we learned many cool facts! The students will be introduced to a fiction story about a bat named Stellaluna this week. It is a fun book to read this time of year. Another story we'll be enjoying this week is The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything. The students will enjoy doing a reader's theater on this story and performing it for their classmates.
