What we will be learning for the week of August 29th - September 2nd

We had a wonderful first week of school and we're ready Week #2! This week we will begin our daily homework routine and will get to go to the library for the first time this school year. Our library day is every Wednesday at 12:30 so watch for those library books to come home on those days. Also, we hope to see you at Parent Info. Night this Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:15 to go over important information for your child's 2nd grade year.

This week's Word Study/Spelling pattern will be words with the short e sound. Watch for your child's list of words to come home each Monday and don't forget to practice throughout the week so that they will be ready for their assessment each Friday! Every Monday afternoon, I will load the spelling words into the Spellingcity.com website in case your child would like to use that as a resource to study and practice at home....this can count as their Monday night Spelling homework as well. Also in Language Arts this week, we will be reading stories about Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel. We read the story, "Alone", last week and will be reading "A Swim" this week. We will do some reader's theater activities with Frog and Toad too. Non-fiction texts about frogs and toads will be part of our focus this week as well since our district is encouraging us to incorporate more non-fiction texts into our curriculum. The students will be learning similarities and difference between frogs and toads. We will introduce our Writer's Workshop routines this week and will be working how to begin writing great stories.

In math, we will continue to work with geometry. This week our focus will be on 3-dimensional figures. We will take a look at the number of edges, faces, and vertices. Please look for a note to come home on Tuesday discussing our "Math Fact Challenge!"

Social Studies: We have been reading stories about Kelso and Lily who are both frogs. They have taught us strategies to solve small problems and what to do when we have a big problem. Ask your students to tell you about Kelso!

Science: We will be learning about safety and how to use some of the tools we will use this year in science. We will learn what each tool does and how to use it correctly.

What we will be learning for the week of August 22nd - 26th

For our first week of school, we will be getting to know each other through various games and activities in both classes. We will also be practicing our daily routines and expectations for the year.

Each student will bring home a "Getting to Know You" bag on the first day in their Red Homework Folder. There will be directions attached to the bag and they can work on it all week at home, and then bring it in on Friday to share with the class. This will be their only homework for this first week, along with studying their spelling/word study list that will come home on Monday as well.

In Math we’re going to be working on geometry, graphing, number sense, and problem solving. Keep on practicing those facts to 18, as we will be learning more about addition and subtraction strategies. Citizenship is our theme in Social Studies. We will discuss how to solve problems (small and large) and how to get along with others in our classroom community. In Science, we will be learning the basics of the scientific process, safety in science labs, and about the tools we will be using as scientists. In Language Arts we will be studying words with the short a sound, and writing and reading stories about our summer vacations.

It's going to be a great week of learning in 2nd grade!
